Een delicate driehoeksverhouding waarin het personage Maxim uitsluitend gebaseerd is op de vertelsels van twee smoorverliefde vrouwen. Kira Muratova (°1934, Soroki - 2018, Odessa, Oekraïne) was in haar leven uitgegroeid tot een heuse legende, maar was tegelijk een van de meest gemarginaliseerde figuren in de Sovjetfilmwereld. Tijdens het Sovjetregime voldeed haar werk niet aan de ideologische vereisten, terwijl haar latere films onvoldoende aan commerciële trends tegemoetkwamen. Haar oeuvre verdween aanvankelijk door censuur achter slot en grendel, en bereikt tegenwoordig voornamelijk het festivalcircuit. In de loop van haar 55-jarige carrière draaide ze 20 films, waarin we telkens een andere esthetiek ontdekken en waarmee ze de fundamentele eigenschappen van de maatschappij op een unieke manier belicht.
